Alex Douthit
Alex was born in Soldotna, Alaska. He was raised in Kenai, attending Sears Elementary, Kenai Middle School and Kenai Central High School. During and after high school he worked in the commercial fishing industry, sport fishing industry and sales. While attending college classes at Kenai Peninsula College he met and married his wife of 17 years, Sarah. Upon completion of his associates degree with a focus on Small Business, he set out to enter into law enforcement. He and Sarah briefly relocated to Juneau then Homer following his law enforcement advance from corrections to police. In 2009 he transferred to Kenai Police and settled in Kenai. After several years in law enforcement he transitioned into the oil industry. Working for a major oil field service company, he became a multi facetted operator and then a driver trainer.
In 2016, Alex set out on his own to start Kenai’s first Commercial Driver Training school. Together with his wife the worked tirelessly through red tape and state regulation. With the help from the Kenai Peninsula Economic Development District, they plunged ahead and opened the school in 2017.
Today, Kenai Peninsula Driving Instruction has grown to employ over 10 team members, training over 500 commercial driver students to day and more than 800 new drivers. Still expanding they just opened Kenai’s first DMV services office next to the job center.
When asked about starting and running a business, Alex will tell you “You work very hard and you never stop.”
Over the years Alex & Sarah added four sons to their family and you’ll often see the boys cleaning semi trucks, filing papers or anything that is needed. Owning a business, it’s all hands on deck. Their oldest son is planning to attend diesel mechanic school in a couple years, so he can return to work in the family business.
Over the last few years, Alex has become increasingly interested in our city and how he can help improve Kenai for families, individuals and businesses. He joined the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission in 2021 and then in 2022 became a member of the Board of Directors for the Kenai Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center. Through these channels, he’s been able to gain more knowledge and connections to those who work hard to make Kenai a thriving place to live, work and own a business.
